It's like pretending to be limited while not being limited at all. They're not bad, but having so much detail with such a limited frame count really makes it look like the boring style of modern RPG Maker engines. Look, I loved the PSP version and all but I too think the sprites looked rather silly in it. My personal favorite is the first version on SNES. What can I say, I love all of them! They each have flaws but each have their advantages.
I own older versions that I bought much later than their release date. Same for DS, Smartphone and Steam versions.
I did buy the PSP version when it came out :)
